PUBLIC FORUM: South Australia - The Nuclear State? Why it makes no sense.

South Australia is to have a Royal Commission to look into expanding our role in all aspects of the nuclear cycle from increased mining and processing of uranium, through to enrichment, nuclear power plants and disposal of radioactive waste.

What’s behind this latest push? Will the Royal Commission tell us anything we don’t know already? Is the process credible or will the result be a foregone conclusion? And most importantly, is nuclear the way to go for SA?

This special event gives you the chance to hear two of Australia’s foremost anti-nuclear campaigners explain why Australia should not go down the nuclear path. You'll also hear from SA's peak conservation body about what we can do.

Senator Scott Ludlam is a Greens Senator for Western Australia and party spokesperson on nuclear issues. Scott has examined the nuclear industry in depth in Australia and overseas and concluded that “not through any artifice of emotion or ideology, but by market realities, community opposition and technological obsolescence, the nuclear age is ending.”

Professor Ian Lowe is past-President of the Australian Conservation Foundation and one of Australia’s most eminent environmental scientists. He has decades of experience in championing better policies for a cleaner, fairer and more sustainable world. As Ian told the National Press Club back in 2005: “if nuclear is the answer it must have been a bloody silly question”!

Craig Wilkins is the Chief Executive on the Conservation Council of South Australia. Craig has 20 years' experience as a community change agent, facilitator and environmental campaigner and his career has straddled the health and environment sectors, both inside and outside of government.

Karina Lester, Yankunytjatjara Anangu, will share her story about the impacts on her, her family and community.
